Chi-Wen Gallery for Frieze New York 2018 presents a multi-national group of artists who comment on present-day environmental issues, whether they be global warming, globalisation, natural disaster and nuclear contamination.
Central will be a flower installation by Ikebana master Atsunobu Katagiri, who by means of radioactive waste from Fukushima contemplates the meaning of nature reviving itself where humans are struggling to do the same.
Also addressing nuclear issues, Takashi Arai uses daguerreotype and video as mediums to create individual records of encounters with deeply interconnected subjects of Fukushima, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki.
Jawshing Arthur Liou’s video “Behind the Waves” is based on his foot journey in areas savaged by the 2011 tsunami in Japan. The project evokes a sense of resolve and empathy through the participation of local volunteers.
In Yuan Goang-Ming’s unsettling video “Landscape of Energy”, a camera floats over a coastal landscape towards the domes of a nuclear power plant in the distance, suggesting the looming possibility of ecological disaster.
“The plastic bag is a vessel for an ever-changing content” says Heidi Voet who uses the immediacy and fleeting nature of everyday commodities, which places her work in a critical relationship with globalized culture. Plastic bags do not to respect borders and divisions, bringing with it displaced ecological problems.
Tsui Kuang-Yu responds to the adaptive relationship between humans and society from a biological point of view. He has developed new means to adapt to the environment and to redefine reality, such as a Sea Level Leaker suit that spills water.
