Tsui Kuang-Yu’s “The Shortcut to the Systematic Life: City Spirits” (2005) and Su Hui-Yu’s “The Glamorous Boys of Tang (Chui Kang-Chien, 1985)” (2018) are invited to participate in the inaugural “Asian Avant-Garde Film Festival” hosted by Hong Kong M+ this year.

From May 30 to June 2, 2024, the four-day Asian Avant-Garde Film Festival will embrace independent art and filmmaking in Asia through screenings, exhibitions, performances, talks, workshops, and live acts. These moving image practices thrive beyond the confines of mainstream art and film industries, challenging dominant historical narratives while expanding the possibilities for visual expression.

Tsui Kuang-Yu’s “The Shortcut to the Systematic Life: City Spirits” (2005) will be screened in the “Self x Society” program. This program of experimental films spanning five decades explores the various paradoxes individuals face within society. Tsui Kuang-Yu’s work celebrates artistic agency through the artist’s bold takeover of public space.

Su Hui-Yu’s “The Glamorous Boys of Tang (Chui Kang-Chien, 1985)” (2018) will be featured in the “Glamorous Boys of Tang: Redux” program, which also revisits the 1985 homoerotic fantasy and cult classic “Glamorous Boys of Tang.” Encountering Chiu’s script three decades later, Su Hui-Yu realized the original vision was even more elaborate and fantastical. Su set out to ‘remake’ “Glamorous Boys,” bringing to light its subconscious omissions and repressed desires.

Both artists are represented in MOV Collection, a collaborative collection of video art and moving image, co-founded by Chi-Wen Gallery.
