Artist Statement

Chi-Wen Gallery is pleased to present Huxian Memorial Hall by River Lin and invites viewers to rethink the value of human rights.

Huxian, the god of the fox in ancient Chinese legends, is viewed as male/female/human/animal and known for performing the fluidity of gender, sexuality and eroticism. Huxian’s pronoun is [they/them/thier]. Nowadays, people seeking love worship them.

Through performance, video, photography and installation of Huxian Memorial Hall, River Lin creates an altar and a fiction about Huxian’s incarnation of LGBTQIA+ figures and activists who have passed away by will or against will from across Asia in the 20th Century and today.

This work acknowledges the LGBTQ community in Asia. While in 2019, Taiwan became the first Asian country to legalise same-sex marriage, many of them still suffer. We must remember “them” who have paved the way for the freedom and ‘love wins’ that we hold today.

In Asia Now Paris, we celebrate Huxian, a love letter from Taiwan and a statement reminding us how the arts live in our precarious society.

La galerie Chi-Wen, à Taipei, a le plaisir de présenter Huxian Memorial Hall de l’artiste River Lin et invite les spectateurs à repenser la valeur des droits de l’homme.

Huxian, le dieu du renard dans les anciennes légendes chinoises, est considéré comme un homme/femme/homme/animal et est connu pour sa fluidité en matière de genre, de sexualité et d’érotisme. Le pronom de Huxian est [they/them/thier]. De nos jours, les personnes en quête d’amour les vénèrent.

Par le biais de la performance, de la vidéo, de la photographie et de l’installation du Huxian Memorial Hall, River Lin crée un autel et une fiction sur l’incarnation par Huxian de figures et d’activistes LGBTQIA+ décédés par volonté ou contre volonté à travers l’Asie au XXe siècle et aujourd’hui.

Cette œuvre est une reconnaissance de la communauté LGBTQ en Asie. Alors qu’en 2019, Taïwan est devenu le premier pays asiatique à légaliser le mariage homosexuel, beaucoup d’entre eux souffrent encore. Nous devons nous souvenir d'”eux” qui ont ouvert la voie à la liberté et aux “victoires de l’amour” que nous détenons aujourd’hui.

Dans Asia Now Paris, nous célébrons Huxian, une lettre d’amour de Taïwan et une déclaration qui nous rappelle comment les arts vivent dans notre société précaire.

藝術家自述

在華人古民間傳說裡，狐仙以忽男忽女、亦男亦女、亦人類亦動物顯像，展演性別、性相與情慾的流動。今日，找愛的人們崇信狐仙。不是「她」、「他」或「它」，狐仙的代名詞是「他們」。

《狐仙紀念堂》計畫結合行為藝術、錄像、攝影與裝置，林人中虛構了一組文本，包括一則狐仙簡史，及狐仙轉世於二十世紀迄今在當代社會的各種變身。狐仙道成肉身在世上遭遇苦難。這個紀念堂追憶的是一組已逝的亞洲酷兒群像。

台灣在2019年成為亞洲第一個同志婚姻合法化的國家。但在此同時，世界各處仍有許多他們在精神與身體上受苦，只因為不順從父權社會框架下的性別定義。這件作品意圖引發觀眾懷想、關切LGBTQ運動在庶民文化場景裡，那些（遭社會多數意見霸凌逼迫而）自殺、（挺身平權運動而遭）他殺或因HIV陽性或憂鬱症等疾病而離世的美麗佳人們。他們是我們今日享有自由的代價。
