Tao Hui ( b. 1987) currently lives and works in Beijing, China.

Tao Hui graduated in 2010 from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute with a BFA in Oil Painting. With an initial degree in Oil Painting, Tao traversed into the art of video and installation, drawing from personal memories, visual experiences and popular culture to weave an experimental visual narration, the focus of which is often our collective experience. Running throughout his work is a sense of misplacement vis-à-vis social identity, gender status, ethnicity and cultural crisis, prompting the audience to face their own cultural histories and living conditions.

Tao Hui has participated in many important exhibitions, festivals and biennials, including: “Daisuke Miyatsu: 25 Years of Video Art: A Point of Transit Signals from East and South East Asia”, Alien Art Centre, Kaohsiung City (TW, 2020); “OCAT x KADIST Emerging Artist Exhibition 2020”, OCAT Shanghai (CN, 2020); “Methods of Connection”, Kyoto Art Center, Kyoto (JP, 2020); “The Sigg Prize exhibition”, M+ Pavilion, Hong Kong (CN, 2019); “Lunar Phases”, UCCA, Beijing (CN, 2019); “re-IMAGE-n”, the 4th Vancouver Biennale, Vancouver (CA, 2019); “Remapping Reality: Selected Video Collection from Wang Bing”, OCAT Shanghai (CN, 2019); “An Opera for Animals”, Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai, (CN, 2019); “Daisuke Miyatsu Collection x Kasama Museum Blending the quintessence of modern and contemporary art”, Kasama Nichido Museum of Art, Tokyo (JP, 2019); Solo Exhibition “The History of Southern Drama, Scene A”, Chi-Wen Gallery, Taipei (TW, 2018); “Saudade; Unmemorable Place in Time”, Belem Cultural Center, Lisbon (PT, 2018); Bangkok Art Biennale 2018 (TH, 2018); Solo Exhibition “Not at all” OCAT Xi’an, Xi’an (CN, 2017); Solo Exhibition “New Directions: Tao Hui”, UCCA, Beijing, (CN, 2015); “Hack Space”, the K11 Foundation Pop-up Space, Hong Kong (CN, 2015) , “M+ Screening: Forty Years”, Broadway Cinema, Hong Kong (CN, 2016); “Why Not Ask Again: 11th Shanghai Biennale”, PSA, Shanghai (CN, 2016); “Turning Point: Contemporary Art in China since 2000”, Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai (CN, 2016); “Tutorial”, Fondazione Museo Pino Pascali, Polignano a Mare (IT, 2016); “Bentu, Chinese artists in a time of turbulence and transformation”, Foundation Louis Vuitton, Paris (FR, 2016); “Essential Matters – Moving Images from China”, Borusan Contemporary, Istanbul (TR, 2015); Contemporary Art Festival Sesc Videobrasil: Southern Panoramas, São Paulo (BR, 2013).
