The Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Japan, is currently presenting a special exhibition focusing on Taiwanese video art for the first time. Featuring works by artists such as Chen Chieh-Jen, Wang Jun-Jieh, and Yuan Goang-Ming, the exhibition runs from April 24 to September 1, 2024.

Curated by Mori Art Museum curator Kondo Kenichi and Taiwanese video art scholar and curator Sing Song-Yong, the exhibition “The Dawn of Taiwanese Video Art in the 1980s-1990s” is part of the museum’s “MAM Research” and “MAM Screen” programs. This exhibition builds on Sing Song-Yong’s 2015 exhibition “Rewind: Video Art in Taiwan 1983-1999” at the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, supported by related field research and findings.

When “Rewind” was held in Taiwan nine years ago, it significantly impacted the study of Taiwanese video art history. By relocating the exhibition to Japan, Japanese audiences now have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the development of Taiwanese video art. To highlight the diversity of Taiwanese video art, this exhibition showcases works addressing social issues, critiques of mass media, and those combining experimental techniques with performance documentation. Featured works include Chen Chieh-Jen’s “Flash” (1984), Yuan Goang-Ming’s “On the Way Home” (1989), and Wang Jun-Jieh’s “Killer Girl, Odyssee III” (1990). These three works were previously exhibited by the Chi-Wen Gallery at Art Basel in Hong Kong in 2016 and 2017.
